Need for Road Safety

The Global status report on road safety 2013 estimates that more than 231 000 people are killed in road traffic crashes in India every year. Approximately half of all deaths on the country’s roads are among vulnerable road users. The statistics shows a shocking report and if this continues, road accident death rate might reach 1.9 million people annually by 2020.

Every individual needs to be safe on roads. And if you wish to be one of them, we need to avoid some of the major mistakes.

Do you remember seeing road safety awareness boards while driving? If not, let’s have a glance at some to improve road safety:

Speed Thrills but Kills.

One of the main reasons for road accidents is stated as over speeding. Public roads are not the place for showing driving skills. More the speed, more the distance required for stopping. Over speeding reduces the ability of the driver to turn and adjust to curves. Accidents can be prevented by controlling speed of vehicles and also it can decrease the impact, lessening the severity of injuries. Use Speed limiters.

Don’t Drink and Drive.

Drinking and driving never goes in the right direction. Reports say alcohol consumption can slow down your central nervous system including brain. This will affect your vision, reaction time, concentration, coordination, and judgmental power. Alcohol will turn to control your driving skills!

Use Seat Belts While Driving.

As per Central Motor Vehicle Rules, the driver and the person seated on the front seat must wear seat belt, while the vehicle is in motion. A recent study shows that wearing seat belts while driving reduces fatalities by about 60 per cent and injuries by nearly 50 per cent. Check out the five reasons how wearing seat belts reduce injuries from mishaps:

Keep the person safely inside the vehicle.
Helps to slow down the body.
Protects brain and spinal cord.
Spread force over wide area of body.
Strongest parts of body will be under control.
Use seat belts for every trip, no matter how short it is.

Switch Of Mobile Phones While Driving.

Researches show that drivers are four times more prone to have a mishap by using mobile phones while driving. Driver distraction is recorded as the major reason for road accidents. Drivers using mobile phones will have the same lack of concentration of a drunken driver. The best ways to use mobile phones while driving:

Park your car safely and then make calls.
Don’t read or send text messages while driving.
Use voice mail while driving.

Obey Traffic Rules.

Road safety measures are used to prevent people from being killed or seriously injured. Traffic laws are important as they protect the drivers and pedestrians who obeys it.

Follow the traffic signs and road markings.
Obey Speed limits.
Always keep left.
Use required hand signals.
Respect pedestrians.
