The Increasing Rate of Use in Speed Governors

As a result of the increasing safety measures on roads, there has been a tremendous increase in the usage of speed governors in vehicles. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway norms, speed governors should be installed in vehicles weighing more than 3,500 kg or carrying eight passengers or above. The speed governors which can alter their speed according to the condition of the roads are highly preferred.

Recent studies have shown that there is a decline in the road accidents rates that causes death, as a result of the installation of speed governors. There are many incidents which show that many deaths could be avoided if speed limiters were installed. The awareness programmes among the public and the government policies have resulted in installation of speed governors widely across vehicles. Laws are being made to make speed governors mandatory in all vehicles.

The latest surveys and articles on road accidents had pointed out that plying of high speed commercial vehicles on highway was one of the main reasons for road accidents. In the case of number of road accident fatalities, the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) has increased from 3.6 per cent to 4.2 per cent and the number of injured persons has declined from 4.2 per cent to 0.6 per cent during the same period.

Even now there are many vehicles without speed governors, which plays a key role in road accidents. But the policies of the government and public interests shows that very soon all vehicles will be fitted with speed limiters and the accidents caused due to overspeeding on roads can be avoided. Early installation of speed governors can save lives.
